After a short visit to Arles, my husband and I continued on to Nîmes, where we spent the night in a charming hotel right in the old part of town.
Nîmes was an important Roman city and still bears traces of that past. Besides, the arena, which is one of the best preserved, there is the Square House and the Tour Magne, which offers spectacular views of the city.
As in any mediterranean city, life seems to revolve around the many town squares. Most of these public areas are off limit to cars, leaving plenty of space for pedestrians, cyclists and outdoor cafés.
The arena was built in the first century A.D. and seated about 25,000.
