Gowanus Canal Superfund Community Advisory Group Holding General Meeting This Tuesday

The Gowanus Canal Superfund Community Advisory Group (CAG) will be holding its general meeting on Tuesday, 6:30 PM at Mary Star of the Sea Senior Apartments, 41 First Street.
Two important items will be on the agenda:
-The Environmental Protection Agency will update the community on the status of the Gowanus Superfund Record of Decision (ROD), which is expected to be released this fall.
The ROD contains the final remedy for the clean-up chosen by the Agency and is a very important step towards beginning the actual remediation of the polluted waterway.

-Representatives of National Grid will give an update on a Pilot Study at Citizens Gas Works. National Grid has been named a Potential Responsible Party (PRP) and will have to remedy three former gas manufacturing sites along the Gowanus Canal. One of these sites is the five acre track of land, located between Smith Street and the Gowanus Canal, was once the site of a Citizens Gas Light Company's 12th Ward Gas Work plant, where coal and petroleum products into flammable gas for surrounding neighborhoods. Citizen later sold to Brooklyn Union Gas, which became Keyspan, which is now National Grid.The plant was decommissioned in the early 1960's.

The CAG meeting is open to the public.
